ALOHA! My name is Donna Hitomi Fear and I am the owner and creator of Originals by HITOMI. I am a professional seamstress in Kailua Kona, Hawaii. I was born in a small rural town of Kailua Kona, but as a young girl, our family moved to Oahu where I grew up and graduated from Kailua High School. Shortly after high school, I went on to become a professional hairstylist/cosmetician and was practicing in a ritzy salon in Honolulu for many years. When I married in 1982, I returned to my hometown of Kailua Kona to set up home and raise my 3 children.
I began to design and sew cute outfits for my children as they were growing up. It was a way I could show my creative talents in textiles. When people saw my designs, they asked me to sew outfits for their children too, and that is when I started my business “Originals by Hitomi”. I have been sewing full time ever since, not only for small children, but designing and sewing clothing for adults as well. My sewing business was the perfect opportunity for me to stay at home, raise my children and still make an income. And I loved what I did.
My Sewing Business
My specialty is sewing clothes for the hard-to-fit. I design clothing to fit perfectly to your body size, whether you are a size 1 or size 26. My specialty is also clothing alterations. I have designed and sewn uniforms for many hotels and restaurants in West Hawaii, and I have also created gowns for contestants entering beauty pageants; many of them have won titles wearing my creations. My hand-sewn costumes have also been featured in large hula halaus competing in the Annual Merry Monarch Hula Competition. Many examples of my work are available at my Etsy site here: /www.originalsbyhitomi.etsy.com.
Quilting & Quiltmaking
A few years ago, I was introduced to the world of quilting, and thus another enterprise has arisen. I bought a APQS Millennium Long-arm quilting machine and Intelliquilter (IQ). I am the only long arm quilter to have a intelliquilter(IQ) system. I have added quilt making and quilting services to my professional sewing business. Quilting has opened the doors for my creativity in designing and creating pieces with many different color schemes and a different flair from the normal quilting. I hope to share my creativity with the world. Examples of my quilts can be found in the Photo Gallery on this site. Recently, I have designed my own quilt pattern (Hawaiian Sunbonnet #1 and #2, Aloha Sue and Aloha Sam) that is being sold at most quilt stores on the Big island. You can also purchase my patterns on my etsy site.
My daughter also has a creative touch and is making handmade original jewelry pieces – see her Etsy site Adorned by the Sea.
